EXPERIENCE
As part of our aim to support young people on the Isle of Wight, we are able to offer work experience for 17-19 year olds, working as a Digital Print Production Assistant.
This can take a number of forms – either a block placement for a week or two, or a day a week for a period, or shorter sessions if this would be helpful – we are happy to discuss options.
The focus of your work experience can also be flexible:
- Working more on the design side – using Adobe and other industry standard software to manipulate, edit and perfect designs to meet our customer’s requirements;
- Working more on the production side – using industry standard software and machines to create finished products;
- Or a combination of the two to gain a fuller understanding of the whole process.
What you will learn:
- How a busy print enterprise works, and how to use applications and machines that enable us make good quality products efficiently
- Excellent workplace skills, such as timekeeping, communication with colleagues and customers, critical thinking and problem-solving, following instructions, offering suggestions and asking questions, reporting faults or concerns, health and safety, meeting customer expectations and deadlines.
What you’ll be doing
- With support, amending designs on-screen using the latest Adobe Software and other applications, understanding how designs must be set up to enable print production:
- Editing text and layout, using Adobe InDesign’s styles, typefaces and other design elements to meet requirements;
- Editing photographs using Adobe Photoshop to remove blemishes, improve quality and colour, cropping to size;
- Exporting proofs for checking, using Adobe Acrobat and proofing applications;
- Setting up jobs for print using imposition software.
- With support, progressing a job through from when it’s sent to print to despatch:
- Using our digital print-production presses, handling stock and consumables;
- Checking all products at all stages, reporting concerns or errors;
- Using a variety of finishing processes, such as cutting, creasing and folding, bookleting, laminating, before packing correctly-labelled finished products;
- Despatching all completed jobs on time, using on-screen booking systems, checking weights and delivery schedules.
- Communicating with customers, with support, face-to-face, on the phone, or on-line (by email or via our website).
- Helping with general duties, such as stock control, monitoring deliveries, keeping us organised and efficient, problem-solving issues as they arise.
What we’re looking for:
- Someone with a good eye for accuracy (including spelling and grammar, typography and consistency) detail, meeting customer requirements and deadlines;
- A friendly, empathetic and can-do attitude, ability to engage in physical work;
- The ability to make suggestions as well as to take advice;
- Willingness to learn and take on a variety of tasks, both on-screen and physical.
